Karl Hoagland Honored with Lifetime Membership in Tamalpa Runners

It is with great pride that Tamalpa Runners’ Board of Directors has granted Karl Hoagland a Lifetime Membership in recognition of his outstanding contributions to our club and the broader running community.

Karl’s connection to the Tamalpa Headlands 50k Race is a story of dedication and generosity. After nearly two decades under Tamalpa’s stewardship our race was and then cancellation due to COVID restrictions. Karl revived this iconic race in 2023, ensuring it continued to challenge and inspire ultrarunners both locally and nationally. In early 2024, Karl took his commitment one step further by transferring ownership of the race back to Tamalpa Runners, empowering us to carry on this proud tradition.

His efforts didn’t stop there. Karl provided invaluable support to our Race Director, Victor Ballesteros, during the transition. From offering guidance behind the scenes to showing up on race day, Karl was there every step of the way. As Victor put it, “Karl’s commitment and generous spirit were with us at every turn! His guidance, counsel, and wisdom helped us succeed in our mission to support the running community and host exceptional races.”

Victor was successful in pursuing this race for National Championship status by USA Track & Field in 2024, and hopes to repeat this honor in 2025.

Beyond the Headlands 50k, Karl’s impact on the running world is profound. As the owner of Ultrarunners Media Group and Ultrarunner Magazine, he has elevated the ultrarunning community, all while pursuing his own ultrarunning endeavors with humility and passion.

Karl now joins an esteemed group of Tamalpa Lifetime Members, including our founder Kees Tuinzing and other legendary contributors: Eve Pell, Eda Stickle, Dave Waco, Don Picket (RIP), and Coach Frank Ruona.

We are deeply grateful for Karl’s unwavering dedication to running and education and look forward to continuing our shared journey of supporting and inspiring runners. Thank you, Karl, for everything you’ve done and continue to do for
